So my review might seem a little (really) bias because I have been waiting for this game for so long and as Bastion is one of my favourite games of all time. But I can safely say after seeing other reviews that this game has gone down a hit and I am absolutely in love with it.
You are thrown straight into the game from the get go - playing as a lady called Red and you soon learn she is a talented musician who was once well known throughout Cloudbank. The game takes similar aspects from Bastion, it is isometric RPG game, with just a singular voice over actor 'telling' the story - The Transistor.
The Transistor is a sword you receive in the opening credits of the game, which you are able to add 'boosts' and various functions after levelling up and this helps you in battles. I will not delve too much into the story itself as it is something you need to witness yourself and should never be ruined! However the city of Cloudbank is full of crime and you spend your time moving from various places in the city finding clues which expand the story.
As previously said the world is riddled with little clues and interactive elements which add a touch of personal depth to the story, especially as you can leave comments as Red on the bulletin boards. But when you're not scouring the edges of map to find these little gems you will be in battle robots, sometimes even robotic 'Jerks' (no literally one of the first robots you meet is called the Jerk 2.0).
When meeting your first opponent in battle a perimeter appears which forces you to fight all of your enemies before proceeding. They tend to be set out in sets of enemies which makes you use various combinations to defeat them. The more you level up the more the robots also level, so the game will get harder according to your level. I loved this element of adjusting to your play-style and found that if I did decided change my technique the battles would change instantaneously.
In an almost turn-based combat, you have a countdown timer before you can freeze time and plan your attack before unleashing this against your enemies. Then you have a cool-down period before you can attack again in real-time or with your special freeze time ability.
I chose to use a mixture of real time attacks against enemies which heal others or shielded them, and then freeze time to attack the bigger more badass 'Jerk' type robots. You are able to add different functions to The Transistor and equip four of them which represent a button on the controller (you can use the others functions as boosts). You gain these abilities from the corpses of people you meet throughout the city. Depending on the persons personality depends on the functions ability. For example; one of the characters you take a function from is quite attractive and appealing, so her ability enables you to charm a robot to help you for a short period of time.
Another key aspect I loved about this game is the fact that if you lose all your health in battle that instead of dying you lose one of your functions equipped to The Transistor. You can re-enable this once you find a save point after a battle.
Overall the game looked incredibly beautiful, the neon and lighting effects really did make an impact in the game. It is game which flourishes under the wonderful soundtrack and voice-acting by the wonderful Logan Cunningham (who if you didn't know also did the voice-over for Bastion). I fell instantly in love with this game and was completely sucked into the story - also Red is the kind of video-game character I would LOVE to cosplay.
I hope you enjoyed this review and go out and buy the game, it's a mere £14.99/$14.99 on the playstation store (or also available on PC via Steam).
Have you played this game yet, or Bastion?
Amy x
