So after almost 80 hours I finished Persona 4 Golden on Vita, and my oh my what an absolutely outstanding game. I still can't quite believe it's over! I had such an incredible emotional journey whilst playing this time and I honestly cannot recommend it enough to JRPG fans or anyone wanting to play a JRPG for the first time, it is a mixture of your typical turn-based roleplaying game with a simulation aspect too.
You play as a male protagonist 'hero' who has recently come to stay with his uncle and niece for a year while his parents work abroad. It is set in a rural town in Japan, Inaba - it takes around 2 hours for the game to pick up and the main storyline to kick in. But the characters and voice acting is so amazing you don't really mind sitting through a couple of hours of talking and walking around.
Suddenly a few unexplained murders begin happening about the quiet town and people begin to talk, you start building relationships 'social links' (which are a key aspect to this game and come in handy near the end of the game) and begin dreaming about a strange blue velvet room where an old gentleman and young woman explain your Persona to you - you can summon various Personas to battle with you - simple enough!
As the murders progress so does a strange fog in the town and you and your group of best friends come together with your personas to solve the mystery of the murders and hopefully rescue people before they become the next victim, using a TV! (exciting to all of you who haven't played it I know).
I don't want to spoil any of the story for anyone as this is one of the most story driven games I've ever played, but I think the simulation side of the game, building relationships and solving the case is better than the actual turn-based battling. The dungeons are well crafted and the shadows are fun to fight don't get me wrong, but I had a lot more fun trying to do side-quests in the towns and working on becoming better friends with my group.
This games has a brilliant range of English/American voice actors which is quiet rare for a translated game, normally we end up getting a really dodgy imported version in the UK but it was amazing, especially Kanji! So if you do decide to play, let me know if you can guess the man behind the voice.
The style of the game, every single dungeon had its own essence and theme behind it and each one was particularly magical - you just find yourself warped into this world which you did not know about before you turned on the game, it's quite crazy how well made this game is. I could find not one singular fault.
I did not want this game to end, I had such an emotional attachment to it and when it was over I felt instantly bored. Especially with some of the events that happen in game (one which almost made me cry on the train to work...)
Teddie is possibly the greatest character in a JRPG of all time!
I recommend this to everyone (most JRPG fans have already played it to death) but for those who want to experience a first time game like this which has every aspect of the game 100% perfect then start here. You do not need to have played the previous games in the series, luckily they don't really link on.
I played the Vita remake and bought it on the PSN store for £12 and I consider that SO cheap for the amount of gameplay you get - I have a new game plus ready to be played and I will definitely be coming back to it.
This game got a 10/10 for me, and I can only wish I had played it sooner because I cannot believe I missed out for so long!
Have you played any decent JRPGs recently, or would you like some recommendations, let me know in the comments below!

This game sounds very cool. I love RPG type games, but have never played a JRPG before. I will keep my eye out for this one!
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the first JRPGs I played! It's so worth it and I'm pretty sure it's quite cheap on the PS store :3
DeleteI've never played any of the games in the Persona series, so it's good to know that I don't need any previous knowledge to play this one. Looks interesting!
ReplyDeleteI've never played a Persona game, but I've always been curious. This sounds like a good entry point.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely the best one to start with if you want something that has the best of every element! :)
