This eerie game is brought to us by Owl Cave (Richard & Alice) in a point and click adventure game...
Much like other point and click games (Broken Sword is a prime example) this game has a solid story behind it, and if you enjoy games in this genre you will be sure to have a great time playing through this one.
Chapter One: Inhale, is based around Alex back in New York City, she is clearly dealing with personal issues and we see a glimpse into the difficult events she is facing. She is currently waiting on a package which turns out to be a train ticket to Augur Peak.
In this chapter you are made to do some puzzles before claiming your ticket, this chapter is pretty slow but sets the tone for the rest of the game. They use a nice mix of suspense and clues around the room to keep you intrigued even with a slow opening.
Chapter Two: Sepulchre, then goes to Dr. Lang's perspective, again the beginning of this chapter is very slow, but this seems to be the theme of the game. Without giving too much away, we see an instant difference between both characters, when playing as Dr. Lang it seems as though he is much more aware of his environment and instantly has strange feelings about the train he is aboard. This chapter does pick up nearer the end, and we finally start to see the 'horror' themes within this game, personally I don't want to delve into what happens in the second act of this chapter because I feel like it would give too much away, so I will let you experience that for yourselves, let's just say it's quite unsettling at times.
Chapter Three: Exhale, now we flick back to Alex, this chapter does not start off slow and begins as mysterious as the second one ended. We see some images from Alex's past and we begin to put the puzzle pieces together of the story and how Alex, Lang and the train have a connection in some way.
Now this is a much more in-depth look at a game than I would normally do, but I found this game very compelling. I was once a massive point and click fan, especially games with a magnificent story line to boot, this games story really kept me captivated and made me want to finish it. Not only this but the voice acting to go alongside it seemed natural and flowed perfectly with the game.
I think The Charnel House Trilogy deserves a play-through by anyone who is a fan of the horror, adventure or point and click genre. It's slightly different and has shown that you can take a different approach in storytelling and mix up genres to create a lovely indie title. It took me just 3 hours to complete, however for the price of £4.79 you cannot complain.
If you did want to give this game a go, check it out on steam here.
And I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
